Apart from a striped sash around the waist of Leander’s father, all three wear unpatterned garments. Leander wears a bright red cloak, buskins topped by small gold lions’ masks, and a blue tunic gathered at the neck into a golden rectangle incorporating a tiny gold face. His mother has earrings, and a jewelled hair-ornament from which an opaque veil depends, enveloping her to the thighs, making her look a little like a Roman matron. She extends an arm protectively behind her son. His father points to a two-masted ship, one sail billowing in a stiff breeze. The ship, too, has an ‘antique’ appearance, its high stern carved with a gigantic two-tailed siren, and the prow in shape of a sea-monster with projecting horny beak and an upswept scallop-shell brow. A turbanned captain sits there, directing his four windswept crew as they struggle with the sail. Small boats with men tending them are by the far shore in front of a complex of buildings that include an obelisk and a huge mansion with statues on the roof. Among trees and plants growing on the near shore are an autumnal oak, right, and a blackberry bramble near a sprouting stump.\r\n\r\n<b>Border description</b>\r\n\r\nDesigned as a gilded frame with areas painted to resemble marble, the border is composed of the following decorative mouldings, starting from the strongly shaded inner rebate showing light from the left:\r\n1)\t3-bead-and-reel (on three sides only, not along the bottom)\r\n2)\tsheaf of laurel leaves bound by ribbon (three sides only, not along the bottom)\r\n3)\ta flat area, marbled blue, lilac, pink and white, with gilt decoration at the corners (an angled mask with rayed head-dress flanked by vine tendrils) and centre sides (a male head in cameo, a boy at the left, Mercury, right, in arabesque vines)\r\n4)\tvariant egg-and-dart pattern \r\n5)\tgadroon, with a leaf at the corners\r\n\r\nSuperimposed on these at the top, casting feigned shadows, is a blue cabochon in a ‘stone’ surround featuring putti who hold down-turned cornucopias of fruit. Their postures vary, but their appearance is crude and there is no drape of material below them to lend distinction as in related borders.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Clein, Francis","id":"A1338"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Mortlake Tapestry Factory","id":"A9184"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool (hair)","id":"AAT14074"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"},{"text":"worsted","id":"AAT227943"}],"techniques":[{"text":"tapestry","id":"AAT61981"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool and silk tapestry","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Tapestry","id":"THES48887"},{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2011EP8340","2011EP8343","2011EP8342","2011EP8341","2011EP8339","2011EP8338","2011EP8337","2011EP8335","2011EP8330","2011EP8329","2006BF3678"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES325602"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tapestry","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1660-1680","earliest":"1655-01-01","latest":"1680-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Designed, late 1620's; woven 1660-1680"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased (£24,530) Sotheby’s 20 May 1988, lot 10.
