The foremost harvester, a small figure in the middle distance, is drinking from a flagon held in his left hand, his right holding his scythe. Behind him, a man cuts hay, his back to the viewer. Further away, beyond a slender tree, two men and a woman are raking and stacking hay. Male harvesters wear white shirts over coloured hose, the two nearest in pink and blue. A distant building at the right has three small windows, set one above two over a door in the gable end, and a larger window on the side wall.\r\n\r\nBorder\n\r\nA thin pale blue ribbon spirals loosely round a cream and buff rod on an extremely narrow brown ground. Corners and centre sides are marked by a tiny five-petalled flower (four petals only, lower right). Far right in the lower outer blue edging, the name STEPHEN . DE . MAY, preceded by a minute triangle, is woven in yellow . Low on the right side edge is the red cross on a white shield denoting English manufacture.\r\n\nVisual Sources\r\n\r\nHayfield and harvesters come from the background scene to July in The ‘Mortlake’ Months; though the building seems closest to one in a late version of December. Foliage that fills those areas where full-scale figures had occupied the original design may have come from some workshop series of ‘forest-work’. An identical waterfall, however, occurs in a tapestry of Circe and Picus from the Metamorphoses set destroyed in the fire at Uppark.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stephen de May","id":"AUTH315844"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool yarn","id":"x30441"},{"text":"worsted","id":"AAT227943"},{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"}],"techniques":[{"text":"tapestry weaving","id":"x42794"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool on wool warps; 18-20 to the inch","categories":[{"text":"Tapestry","id":"THES48887"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2011EP8311","2012FF6301","2012FH8853","2018KT1474"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES325674"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tapestry","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1695-1715","earliest":"1690-01-01","latest":"1715-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchase from the London Carpet & Textile Co., Thurloe Place (£95)","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"125","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"top edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"124","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"bottom edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"189","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"left side","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"186","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"right side","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"27","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"30/09/2013","earliest":"2013-09-30","latest":"2013-09-30"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Weight including roller","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"DATE AND MANUFACTURE\r\n\r\nUse of Stephen De May’s full name on this cheap version of the ‘Mortlake’ Months most fortunately leaves no doubt as to its manufacture, which otherwise might have been in doubt owing to the survival of the finer and more orthodox version with his initials; while Lord Nottingham’s order to Stephen De May shows that his Months could be expected to be like the Queen’s set at Windsor, which were made by Francis and Thomas Poyntz, but for use of silk in place of gold and silver. Stephen de May is known to have been active as an independent tapestry-maker between 1690 and 1714.\r\n\n\r\n","historicalContext":"This object record is based on the manuscript for the book From Mortlake to Soho: English Tapestry 1619-1782.
