During the early Victorian period many bridegrooms chose shirts like this to wear to their weddings. The shirt fronts, which are typically hand-embroidered in white cotton, were visible above the top edge of the wearer's waistcoat.\r\n\r\nThis shirt-front is beautifully worked with acorns and oak-leaves in a variety of textured stitches. The acorns are worked in satin and buttonhole stitch, while the oak-leaves are filled in with a dense mass of small knots. Acorns are a good luck symbol, and oak leaves represent constancy, strength and longevity, making them a very auspicious choice for a bridegroom.","physicalDescription":"Fragment of a man's cambric shirt front embroidered with oak leaves and acorns.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cambric","id":"x44376"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"embroidered cotton cambric","categories":[{"text":"Marriage","id":"THES48921"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2010EG1512","2020MR1335","2010EG1602","2010EG1513"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES306394"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shirt","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1848","earliest":"1848-01-01","latest":"1848-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Herbert Terry","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"23.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"approximate","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"39","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"approximate","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements are approximate due to the irregular nature of the raw cut edges of the remnant","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This shirt was worn by Edward Moseley Perkins when he married Octavia Shuter at Coulsdon, Surrey, on Nov 9 1848.
