It has a 2¼-inch (5.6 cm) standing collar, 1½-inch (3.7 cm) deep shoulder wings and curving 2-piece sleeves, with a high, pointed waist and 12 laps.  A woven lace, 5/16-inch (6 mm) wide, of beige and brown silk floss and chenille threads, applied in parallel rows, covers the seams and decorates the collar, shoulder wings, sleeves and the laps.  The belly piece appears to be made of baleen and layers of linen stitched together and covered with the green/yellow lining. There are 11 worked buttonholes on each sleeve, 27 down the left front, and the remains of 2 button loops on the collar.  The buttons have a wooden core covered with beige silk thread; 34 remain.  The laps have 6 lacing holes, except for the 2 laps at centre front which each have 3.  There is a lacing loop of green/yellow silk inside each front above the waist. Two eyelets have been worked in the collar at centre back to lace a picadil.\r\n\r\nThe beige silk satin has almost completely shattered and only small fragments remain. The doublet was altered, probably in the late 19th century for fancy dress.  An insertion of beige silk taffeta lined with linen was made in the centre back seam.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"wool (hair)","id":"AAT14074"},{"text":"fustian","id":"AAT132887"},{"text":"baleen","id":"AAT192974"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand weaving","id":"AAT53643"},{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk, linen, cotton, wool, baleen; hand-woven and hand-sewn","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2020MR9260","2020MR7829"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES309718"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Doublet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1605-1610","earliest":"1605-01-01","latest":"1610-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1870-1895","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1895-12-31"},"association":{"text":"altered","id":"AAT105442"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"61.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"overall","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"106.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"chest under arms, excluding insertion","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Isham collection","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Man's doublet, 1605-10, English; Originally beige silk satin, Lined with green/yellow silk taffeta, altered 1870-1895","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["180-1900"],"accessionNumberNum":"180","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1900,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-23","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
