Part of a Norwegian bridegroom's costume purchased by the donor in 1865 from the original owner. The jacket is skirted and slightly cut away in front, with long narrow sleeves. The pattern is a plaid, partly filled with conventional figures supposed to represent the bride, trees, and floral ornament, repeated diagonally within oblong compartments formed by the plaid. White wool lines the jacket. \r\n\r\nThe jacket has two large pockets, with wide curved and pointed flaps. Silver buttons adorn the jacket's collar, cuffs, and traverse the closure at front; the buttons are stamped with a female figure thought to represent the Dutch Maiden, holding a lance and liberty hat in her right hand, and resting her left arm on a Bible upon a pedestal. The outer rim of the buttons bear the inscription 'BLYHEIDT VRYHEIDT', meaning <i>joyful freedom</i>.\n\n","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woven","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Folk Art","id":"THES49003"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Regional Dress","id":"THES283114"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Wedding","id":"THES283897"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019LM1902","2019LM1983"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES390091"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jacket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Norway","id":"x29052"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Oppland","id":"x38896"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Gudbrandsdal","id":"x38897"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1759","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1759-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"T.35-1913","id":"O358899"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"T.37-1913","id":"O353112"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs. E.
