The gown is front opening, the bodice lined with linen. It has a fitted back and elbow-length sleeves with double, scalloped ruffles. The skirts are made of 6 lengths of silk, gathered into a waist seam. \r\n\r\nThe gown was probably first made 1745-50 and then altered in the 1760s to update the style and possibly for another wearer. The hem was taken up, the robings altered and the top sleeve ruffles converted to cuffs and white silk fringe added. The gown was later altered in the late 19th century for fancy dress. The side seams of the bodice were taken in and the waist seam reconfigured. Ties were added on the inside skirts to create a polonaise/bustle effect and the sleeve ruffles and front skirt panels lined with ivory silk sarsenet.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Garthwaite","id":"A8416"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x28674"},"note":"The fabric designer"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand weaving","id":"AAT53643"},{"text":"brocading","id":"AAT53648"},{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk, linen; hand-woven, brocaded, hand sewn","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[{"text":"rococo","id":"AAT21155"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2025PE8270","2025PE8028","2025PE8026","2025PE8030","2025PE8046","2025PE8067","2025PE8062","2025PE8054","2015HM0088","2015HM0089","2015HM0087","2012FM9389","2012FM9390","2019LN7116","2018KY8747"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA015","id":"THES413406"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES306803"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Gown","id":"AAT46161"}],[{"text":"Fringe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spitalfields","id":"x29420"},"association":{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},"note":"brocaded silk"},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":"Spitalfields was the centre of silk weaving in England from the late 17th to the late 18th centuries, producing complex woven patterns like this one."},{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"gown"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1744","earliest":"1744-01-01","latest":"1744-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":"The design in our collection bears the inscription: Mr Swan.
