The picture is shaded with water colour and embroidered with different coloured metal threads, metal wire, coil, strip and purl inlaid work and in a variety of patterned couching and or nue techniques. It also has silks in shades of cream, beige, brown, red, blue, mauve, black, yellow and green. Long and short, satin, split, stem, florentine, raised overcast and speckling stitches, with French knots, painted darned-silk pile, seed pearls and metal ornaments. The picture achieves realistic effects of fur, metal and of differently textured fabrics. All the flesh and the sky are outlined in stem and split stitches and any shading effects are achieved with water colour.\n\nThe selvedge width of the satin has dictated the slight cutting of the picture at either side. The panel is mounted in an ebonized frame.\n\nEmbroidered after an engraving by Paulus Pontius Thomyris causing the Head of Cyrus to be put into a Vessel of Blood (c1630 - 1658), based on the painting Head of Cyrus Brought to Queen Tomyris by Peter Paul Rubens (about 1622 - 1623).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embroidered satin, metal thread, couching, or nue","categories":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BD2933","2013GC9760"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304275"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Picture","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1630-1650","earliest":"1630-01-01","latest":"1650-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"55.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"ground fabric","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"45.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"ground fabric","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"54","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"picture","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"43.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"picture","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Satia te sanguine Quem Semper Sitisti' (Satisfy thyself with blood for which thou hast always thirsted)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Tomyris, Queen of the Massagetae receiving the head of Cyrus', embroidered satin, Netherlands, 1630-1660","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Miller, Lesley Ellis, and Ana Cabrera Lafuente, with Claire Allen-Johnstone, eds. Silk: Fibre, Fabric and Fashion.
