To make a deep, rich ground, he built up layers of glass coloured with different metal oxides. To create the surface decoration, he carved through the layers while the glass was still mallebble, in a technique called 'marquetry on glass'. In this vase he uses these metals to achieve a variety of amber-coloured glass layers employed in a technique called <I> marquetrie sur verre </I> (marquetry on glass).
