They stand beneath ogee arches that\r\nsprout delicate foliage, and the architecture is\r\ntopped with birds in the spandrels, each one\r\nwith different plumage. At the top is the lower\r\npart of an unidentified figure, and a related fragment\r\nshows the partial figure of St Paul. The\r\ncomplete orphrey would probably have presented\r\na cycle of the apostles. The figures were\r\nworked very finely, but the silk stitches are now\r\nextensively worn, which allows much of the\r\nunderdrawing of the design to be seen. The gold\r\nbackground in the spandrels has a simple lozenge-\r\ndiaper pattern, but with a variety of more\r\nornate leaves and flowers beneath the arches.\r\nThe orphrey probably came originally from\r\na cope, and was re-used multiple times in its\r\nsubsequent life; the reverse side has a number\r\nof traces of linings, braids and patches.","physicalDescription":"Parts of a cope-orphrey. They depict the apostles, St Thomas with a lance, St James the Great with a pilgrim's staff and wallet, St Andrew with a cross (on 827) and St Paul with a sword (on 827a), beneath multifoil ogee arches, with birds in the spandrels. In the spandrels the gold background is worked with a lozenge diaper, and beneath the arches with powderings of leaves and flowers. Embroidered in silver and silver-gilt thread and coloured silks in underside couching, split stitch, laid and couched work and raised work on linen.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidery","id":"x40351"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Embroidered in metal thread and silks on linen","categories":[{"text":"Ecclesiastical textiles","id":"THES48962"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2016JA2215","2021NA1153","2016HY9431","2016HY9432","2016HY9433","2016HY9434","2016HY9436","2016JA2216","2016JA3906","2016JA3911","2016JA3913","2016JA3938","2016JA3939","2011ER8573","2011FB1960","2015HV1945","2017KA0139"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES308401"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES311875"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Orphrey","id":""}],[{"text":"Orphrey","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1340-60","earliest":"1340-01-01","latest":"1360-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased (lot 211) at the sale of the collection of Monsieur M Benoit Hochon, held at the Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 11 and 12 June 1903, together with nos. 821 to 830-1903, for which £408 6s 11d was paid in total.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Two orphrey fragments, English, 1335-1360, embroidery on linen","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"A.G.I.
