It is quilted in running stitch with pink silk thread in a horizontal pattern of an undulating leafy stem with star-like flowers around the hem, and 6 rows of ogee arches above. The petticoat is made of 6 panels of silk with pocket openings in the side seams, bound with 1⅛-inch (2.8 cm) wide pink silk ribbon. The same ribbon binds the hem.\r\n\r\nThe petticoat was altered in the late 19th century, probably for fancy dress. The waist binding and ties were removed, the pleats undone and a band of pink cotton attached, with a casing and drawstring at the top. A tuck was taken in one side of the petticoat.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"worsted","id":"AAT227943"}],"techniques":[{"text":"satin weave","id":"x37324"},{"text":"quilting","id":"AAT53656"},{"text":"hand weaving","id":"AAT53643"},{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk, wool; hand-woven, satin weave, hand-sewn, hand-quilted","categories":[{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2020MR5837"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES310424"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Quilted petticoat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1770","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1770-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1870-1910","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1910-12-31"},"association":{"text":"altered","id":"AAT105442"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr H.
