In 1835 he was appointed professor at the university of Louvain. Prodigiously prolific and successful, he specialised in church fittings, and his works were widely exported. This group, like many of his sculptures, is in a late gothic style, and was shown at the London 1851 Exhibition, where he was awarded a Prize medal. James Nasmyth, who left the sculpture to the Museum, was a great Victorian engineer. In the 19th century the revival of the Gothic style led to a revival of wood carving, much of it also exported.  Charles Geerts was enormously prolific and successful.
