With the waistband James was referencing a specific form of 1860s corsetry worn under the bust.\n\nThis particular yellow and pink version of <i>La Sylphide</i> was worn by the British artist Marit Guinness Aschan as a young woman. She was one of James's long-term supporters. The couture design is also known to have been carried out in other colourways, such as mauve and white.\n","physicalDescription":"Evening dress ensemble consisting of evening dress, waistband and corsage. Yellow silk organza gown with draped neckline and twisted shoulder straps designed to reveal the corsage of yellow and pale pink flowers and green leaves and the pale yellow silk satin bodice section with narrow pink straps. The full-length skirt is layered and full, and slightly shorter at the sides. The dress is cinched in at the waist with a pale yellow silk satin waistband, based on an underbust corset style from the 1860s often made from a colourful silk textile.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"James, Charles","id":"A2228"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk organza","id":"THES285988"},{"text":"silk satin","id":"x33509"},{"text":"artificial flowers","id":"x40890"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk organza and satin with artificial flowers ","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2022NH0476","2022NH0974","2022NH0478","2022NH0477","2022NH0977","2022NH0976","2022NH0978","2022NH0975","2014GV9062","2014GV9063","2014GV9088","2014GV9090","2014GV9091","2014GW9466","2014GW9489"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404189"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404189"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404189"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Evening dress","id":""}],[{"text":"Waistband","id":""}],[{"text":"Corsage","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1937","earliest":"1937-01-01","latest":"1937-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased.
