This is primarily due to his ground breaking developments in the colour lithographic process, but can also be attributed to his prolific output and ostentatious style: Chéret was capable of rendering even the most banal of subjects sensational. His posters were so popular with the Parisian public that it was rumoured devotees would go out in the middle of the night in order to remove his posters from the walls and add them to their collection.","physicalDescription":"Depicts a harlequin, a clown with an artist's palette, a man in 18th-century French costume and young woman in a yellow hat dancing under a rainbow.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Chéret, Jules","id":"A7495"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Chéret, Jules","id":"A7495"},"association":{"text":"lithographer","id":"AAT25175"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Lithographic ink","id":"AAT187750"},{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"},{"text":"Planographic printing","id":"AAT53255"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MM","shelf":"13","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"produced","id":"x30771"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1893","earliest":"1893-01-01","latest":"1893-12-31"},"association":{"text":"produced","id":"x30771"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"128","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"92","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Includes backing paper","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"J. Its designer, Jules Chéret was a pioneer in exploring colour lithography as applied to poster design, and thus in popularising the colour pictorial poster, bringing this new form of art to the streets of Paris. He founded his own lithographic printing press in 1866 (having served an apprenticeship to a lithographer), and achieved a prodigious output. His best-known work captures the <I>joie-de-vivre</I> of Parisian cabarets, music-halls, dance-halls, and theatres. \r\n\r\nGiven by Mrs. J. T. Clarke\r\n\r\nGiven by Mrs. J. T.
