Ian Thomas had formerly worked at the House of Norman Hartnell, joining in 1952 just in time to assist with the work on the Queen's Coronation robes and dresses for other female attendees. Ian Thomas set up his own couture establishment in 1966. Whilst remaining faithful to Hartnell (until his death in 1979) and Hardy Amies, the Queen continued to patronise Thomas for day and evening gowns.\n\nHe was particularly known for his impeccable pinstripe suits, but these early 1970s garments by Tom Gilbey are designed for casual wear, and reflect a different side to his sartorial style in the 1970s. They were donated to the Museum following Thomas's death by his long-term friend and former colleague from Hartnell, Michael Talboys.\r\n\r\nRegistered File number 1993/1523.\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Man's suit, burgundy and cream safari jacket and trousers, knitted wool and silk, by Tom Gilbey, Great Britain, 1969.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[{"text":"Thomas, Ian","id":"A6298"}],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.55-1995","T.56-1995"],"accessionNumberNum":"55","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1995,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Jacket","Trousers"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-11","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
