During the 1870s, he produced a series of animal sculptures for the city’s Museum of Fine Arts formed in 1875 before appearing at the Royal Academy in London, exhibiting a German wild boar in 1881 and an Owl in 1899. This English dimension to his work is explained by his friendship with the only sculptor-member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Thomas Woolner (1825-1892). Woolner met Haehnel in 1849 and by 1863 boasted of his success in promoting Haehnel's bronzes in England, describing them as 'extraordinary'.
