Samuel (1862-1939) was a sculptor and medallist, a native of Brussels who studied under the medallist Charles Wiener. He was chiefly successful as a sculptor, and examples of his work are widespread in Brussels, but he presented medals at a number of international exhibitions.","physicalDescription":"Obverse: in the centre a naked, bearded male personification of the river Yzer stands, pouring water from a jar into the river at his feet. To the left a French marine fusilier kneels, armed and ready for the attack, to the right a Belgium soldier. Behind the figure are bulrushes and a distant town. Legend.\r\nreverse: A Belgian soldier stands amid rubble against a background of the ruins of the thirteenth-century Cloth Hall in Ypres.
