It has though recently been suggested that is might be a fake (together with A.2-1959), executed by Salomon Weininger.\r\nThe relief corresponds with a relief in the Museo Nazionale, Florence, from which it differs in the absence of gilding on the cloak, tree and other areas and in the chasing of the tree trunk and the interior of the lion's mouth.\r\nThe legend of Hercules and the Nemean Lion reflects Hercules’ first labour set to him by Eurystheus, where he had to bring the skin of an unvulnerable lion, which terrorised the hills around the city of Nemea.","physicalDescription":"The nude figure of Hercules is turned to the right, and is shown astride the lion on a shallow platform like that in 149-1882. His cloak, which is fastened at the neck, blows out behind him, and he forces open the upturned jaws of the lion with both hands. A quiver and bow are suspended from a tree on the right.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Antico (Pier Jacopo di Antonio Alari-Bonacolsi)","id":"A6577"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Relief in bronze","categories":[{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Reliefs","id":"THES49035"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006BB2576","2018KY0097","2019MA6803"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"117","id":"THES49906"},"free":"","case":"4","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Roundel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mantua","id":"x35230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 15th century","earliest":"1450-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"A.2-1959","id":"O350065"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"32.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased in Paris (Vicomtesse d'Harcourt, with A2-1959, for £2126 6s. 9d.), with the help of contributions from the Murray, Webb and Bryan Bequests.
