It has though recently been suggested that is might be a fake (together with A.1-1959), executed by Salomon Weininger.\r\nThe relief corresponds with a relief in the Museo Nazionale, Florence, from which it differs in the absence of gilding in certain areas and in details of chasing in the heads of the snakes and elsewhere.\r\nThe legend of Hercules and the Hydra reflects Hercules’ second labour set to him by Eurystheus, where he had to kill Hydra, the many headed snake in Greek mythology.","physicalDescription":"The nude figure of Hercules is turned to the left on a shallow platform like that in 149-1882. In his raised hands he holds his club, and with his left hand he grasps two of the seven coils protruding from the head of the Hydra. He stamps on the Hydra's tail with his right foot. His cloak, bow and quiver are suspended from a tree on the right.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Antico (Pier Jacopo di Antonio Alari-Bonacolsi)","id":"A6577"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":"Cast after original by"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Relief in bronze","categories":[{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Reliefs","id":"THES49035"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2016JB3333","2016JB3310","2018KY0097","2019MA6802"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES409057"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Roundel","id":""}],[{"text":"Relief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mantua","id":"x35230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1840-1860","earliest":"1835-01-01","latest":"1860-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"A.1-1959","id":"O350066"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"32","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"37.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Including ring"},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions were taken by SCP on 27.10.14 for<b> Bronze Zoo: A Sculptural Menagerie </b>","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased in Paris (Vicomtesse d'Harcourt, with A1-1959, for £2126 6s. 9d.), with the help of contributions from the Murray, Webb and Bryan Bequests.
