It belongs to a rare class of French 17th century fake antiquities produced to deceive the newly active antiquarians in France at that time. Like many of this class, it is not actually based on a real classical lamp, but is mistakenly adapted from a type of classicising oil-lamp produced in Padua in about 1500, of which the department already possesses an excellent genuine example.\r\nIt is made in the form of a harpy, after Il Riccio (Andrea Brioscho). A 'harpy' is a fabulous monster, rapacious and filthy, having a woman's face and body and bird's wings and claws, and is supposed to act as a minister of divine vengeance.","physicalDescription":"Oil-lamp in the form of a harpy.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Riccio, Andrea (Andrea Briosco)","id":"A6473"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Bronze","id":"THES49033"},{"text":"Lighting","id":"THES48925"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Fakes & forgeries","id":"THES48958"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES396158"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES396158"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Lamp","id":""}],[{"text":"Base","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"17th century","earliest":"1600-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"16.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"14.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought from R.G.
