Her head is slightly inclined towards the infant Jesus. The shape of the crescent moon would not have provided sufficient stability for the figure to be placed in an altarpiece. In addition, the two rectangular iron bars, along with relatively large holes in the head and at the base of the crescent moon, and the elaborate carved and gilded back of the Virgin, suggest that the figure was in fact suspended from the vault, probably framed within a circle of the rosary.","physicalDescription":"Figure in painted wood. The Virgin stands on the crescent moon supporting the Child who lies naked across her arms on a white cloth, which he holds with his right hand. The Virgin's hair falls in ringlet over her shoulders down her back. The Virgin's crown is missing and there are a few breakages on the edges of the folds, but the colour, gold on the Virgin's robe and brown for the hair, as well as flesh tints, appears to be early if not original.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted wood","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2010EM3121","2017JU3063","2017JU3079"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"26 (VA)","id":"THES49836"},"free":"","case":"PL002","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statue","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"end of the 15th century","earliest":"1400-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with funds from the Murray Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"114.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Mr W.F Ohly for £250 with funds from the Murray Bequest.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Virgin and child; Wood painted German 15th cent","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Baxandall, Michael. <u>South German Sculpture 1480-1530.</u> Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1974."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jopek, Norbert. <u>German Sculpture 1430-1540.
