Walker was active as sculptor, painter and mosaicist. As a sculptor he was famed for his direct carving. He worked in a variety of materials, including stone, silver and gold, wood, and clay, as well as ivory, and he produced many sculptures and liturgical objects for churches. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools from 1883 to ca. 1887, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1884 to 1937. \nThe sitter Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) was a British political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement who helped women get the right to vote. Walker's bronze bust of Mrs Pankhurst was shown at the Royal Academy in 1929, and in 1930 his monumental bronze figure of her was erected in Victoria Tower Gardens in London, near the Houses of Parliament.","physicalDescription":"The bust is signed on the back in monogram.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Walker, Arthur George","id":"AUTH328573"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ivory on grey stone socle","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AD0999"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"8","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bust","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1929","earliest":"1924-01-01","latest":"1933-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by J.H.J.
