They normally terminated in a metal nozzle which also served as a powder measure, closed by a plug or spring cap, and are often highly decorated.\r\nGunpowder began to be transported in pouches or more rigid containers at about the same date as the introduction of hand-held firearms in the fifteenth century. Such flask might have a military purpose, or be used for hunting. The very decorative pieces were above all a singn of rank, and at the same time aesthetic objects in their own right, and probably never actually functioned as containers for gunpowder.\r\n","physicalDescription":"A powder horn, slightly twisted, is decorated with incised and inked decoration of a warrior in classical dress, perhaps Mars, Mercury, Venus on a shell, and a seated female figure holding a crescent moon, perhaps Diana, angels with a baby boy holding a large ring, a tree encircled by a chain, clusters of grapes and decorative foliate designs. The imagery and iconography are unclear, and the incised decoration is weak in design.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"horn","id":"AAT11826"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"inked","id":"THES261842"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Horn engraved","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Sport","id":"THES48893"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2012FJ2530","2012FJ2532","2012FJ2536","2012FJ2543","2018KN9946"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES395451"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Powder Horn","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"highly likely"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700 - ca. 1730","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1734-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr. W.
