The style is reminiscent of Ignaz Elhafen, but the putti and the figures are closer to the work of Netherlandish masters, such as François Du Quesnoy or Lucas Faydherbe (1617-1697). It is comparable in style with the relief of a Nymph and Satyr in the Louvre, Paris. The general rough quality and apparent mixture of styles suggests that this is in fact a nineteenth century fake, made in imitation of earlier seventeenth-century reliefs. \nThe relief represents the childhood of Jupiter. Jupiter was the son of Saturn, who devoured his children fearing they would usurp him. Jupiter's mother thus fled to Crete to give birth to Jupiter in a cave. Jupiter was brought up at the Cretan Mount Ida by nymphs and he was fed on wild honey and milk from the goat Amalthea.","physicalDescription":"The infant Jupiter is about to be suckled by the goat Amalthea, surrounded by male and female mythological figures.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ivory relief","categories":[{"text":"Reliefs","id":"THES49035"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Myths & Legends","id":"THES49005"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2011EX8988","2011EX8999","2011EX8984"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"022","id":"THES395641"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"or possibly Netherlandish"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850 - ca. 1900","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"in imitation of a date of 1650-1700"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr. W.
