Born in Vienna, he studied at the School of Engraving under Stefan Schwartz, Schulmeister and Zapf and \r\nlater studied medallic art under Tautenahyn. He became the court medalist of the Emperor in 1903.  From 1905 he was director of Vienna's medal school.
