The standing crucified Christ is shown holding a cross, wityh two kneeling figures, one of whom holds a chalice, into which the blood pours from his wounds; the other kneeling figure holds the crown of thorns. Four cherubim are hovering above in the sky. The holder may have had a liturgical function. The style and form both suggest it is Italian, and dates from the mid-seventheenth century (for a similar object see: A.18-1922).","physicalDescription":"Case for a spoon or knife, formed of two pieces of bone. The standing crucified Christ is shown holding a cross, wityh two kneeling figures, one of whom holds a chalice, into which the blood pours from his wounds; the other kneeling figure holds the crown of thorns. Four cherubim are hovering above in the sky. Underneath is a cartouche depicting a monastic saint holding a crozier. On the other side a Pope blesses a kneeling man. Bands of foliage scrolls form the surround. Beneath is a black cartouche, perhaps originally intended to display a coat of arms. The conical base has panels engraved with foliage, alternating with plain panels. The sides of the case are pierced with holes for the attachment of a thong. The circular support is edged with a decorative bone surround. At the base of the holder are two further decorative borders, these pierced with holes. The engraved designs are likewise filled with black mastic or ink. \n\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bone","id":"AAT11798"},{"text":"mastic","id":"AAT14837"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraved bone and ivory on wood core","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2012FK2955","2012FK2957"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"013","id":"THES395616"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Case","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1650","earliest":"1645-01-01","latest":"1654-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"A.18:1-1922","id":"O349240"},"association":"Version"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"32.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"13.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of base","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Sir Charles Wyndham Murray, K.C.B., in 1922.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Case, bone and ivory on wood core, for knifes or spoons, or liturgical instruments, Italian, ca. 1650","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Longhurst, Margaret H. <font -u>Catalogue of Carvings in Ivory.</font> London: Published under the Authority of the Board of Education, 1927-1929, Part II, p. 108"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Trusted, Marjorie, <u>Baroque & Later Ivories</u>, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 2013, cat. no. 298, p. 304"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Christ","id":"N1515"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"palm branch","id":"x43658"},{"text":"men","id":"AAT25928"},{"text":"women","id":"AAT25943"},{"text":"foliage","id":"x42645"},{"text":"cross","id":"x31528"},{"text":"chalice","id":"AAT194762"},{"text":"blood","id":"x39967"},{"text":"crown of thorns","id":"x35246"},{"text":"cherubim","id":"x35266"},{"text":"saint","id":"AAT150555"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["A.19-1922"],"accessionNumberNum":"19","accessionNumberPrefix":"A","accessionYear":1922,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-09-23","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
