In Korea, dragons were associated with moisture, clouds, water and rain. The dark clouds surrounding the dragon suggest his powers as a bringer of rain. Beyond the dragon's snout is a flaming pearl, trailing fiery plumes like those which extend from his limbs.","physicalDescription":"The yellow dragon outlined in blue is depicted writhing among clouds, chasing a flaming pearl. Flames rise from his four legs and an impression of forceful forward motion is conveyed by the dramatic foreshortening of the dragon's forequarters in the lower centre.\r\n\r\nColour: Blue, yellow, black\n\nThe dragon flying through dark clouds is painted in five directional colours, yellow, blue, white, red, and black, reflecting the ancient Chinese thought of ohaeng. Dragons are a traditional symbol of sovereign authority, water control, state protection, defence against evil spirits, and good auspice. They are therefore frequently portrayed in paintings. The dragon in this picture is painted in yellow. A yellow dragon symbolizes the middle of the universe or the king’s power, since yellow indicates the centre among the five directional colours. When dragons are depicted along with clouds, it underlines a wish for rain.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted mineral colours on paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"Chosŏn","id":"AAT106675"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006BC8717"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES396499"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hanging scroll","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Korea","id":"x30965"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1900","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"FE.48:2-1993","id":"O457005"},"association":"Part"}],"creditLine":"Purchased from Lea Sneider.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"126.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"74.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Painting, hanging scroll, mineral colours on paper, Korea, 1750-1900, Joseon dynasty (1392-1897)","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"published in","free":"Beth McKillop & Pauline LeMoigne \"Tradition and Transformation : two decades of Korean Art and Design at the V&A Museum\" in <i>Orientations</i>,Volume 43, number 6, September 2012, pp.83-91."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<font -u>National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage.</font> Daejeon: National Research Institue of Cultural Heritage, 2013, p. 266."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.48:1-1993"],"accessionNumberNum":"48","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":1993,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-10","recordCreationDate":"2000-04-06","availableToBook":true}}
