He moved to Paris in about 1851 as overseer for the Dumas stove and tile firm (which made this panel as a 'blank'), and in 1855 opened his own studio and, later his own retail shop, with his brother Xavier. He invited many well-known painters of the day to design decorations and also to paint some wares directly. This panel by Joseph-Victor Ranvier (1832-1896) is such an example. Deck specialised in researching glazes and colours, inspired by the ceramics of the Middle and Far East. In 1887, only three years before his death, he became Director of the National Manufactory at Sèvres.","physicalDescription":"Panel, decorated with a figure of a weeping nymph <i> La Cruche Cassée</i> in low relief slip and colours.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Joseph-Théodore Deck","id":"A2115"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Joseph Victor Ranvier","id":"A17423"},"association":{"text":"painter","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Mme Veuve Dumas","id":"A30709"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, painted","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2010ED3543","2010EC4662"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"WS","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1864","earliest":"1864-01-01","latest":"1864-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"67","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'JVR' in monogramp painted in relief on obverse.
