It was intended to improve the quality of red wine by bringing as much as possible into contact with oxygen in the air. However, the extreme shape of this vessel must have made it difficult to drink from without spilling. Sill-life paintings of the time show similar types of vessels, made in silver or gold, filled with candied fruit for consumption after a meal.\r\nThe shallow cup of this vessel shows signs of an elaborate cold (un-fired) decoration which has completely worn off over time.","physicalDescription":"Shallow dish on high stem, clear, colourless glass with diamond-point engraved decoration.
