The entry in the catalogue reads as follows\r\nBird and classical ruin. 1816. Block-printed in madder-colours in the drab-style on a dipped blue ground, by Samuel Matley. Another piece of the same chintz stamped 'Saml. Matley and Son, Hodge. British Manufacturory', GR in monogram surmouted by a crown and ;BRITISH MANUFACTORY 438', and excise stamp for 1816. Ill. English Printed Textiles, pl.47. The Matley family took over the Hodge printworks near Mottram, Cheshire in 1805 and continued to print there until 1870.
