Their great achievement was to find a type that turned red when fired under the glaze. This eye-catching red replaced the purple of earlier wares, just as a bright emerald colour replaced the sage green.\r\n\r\nIznik ceramics were exported all over Europe and the Middle East. Copies were also made, first in Ottoman provincial centres and then, after 1600, in a wider area including Italy and Iran.","physicalDescription":"Dish, fritware, with flat everted rim, slip covered and painted in polychrome with naturalistic flowers in the Kara Meni style with roses, hyacinths and tulips, the rim border with overlapping rosettes","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Fritware","id":"x29419"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Fritware, painted in polychrome before glazing","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2008BT0492","2017KB2980"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"36","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Iznik","id":"x32510"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"},{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1560-90","earliest":"1560-01-01","latest":"1590-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"29.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish, fritware, painted in polychrome enamels with roses, hyacinths and tulips, Turkey, probably Iznik, 1560-90","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.2029-1910"],"accessionNumberNum":"2029","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1910,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LM5467","2019LR4657","2019LU6081"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
