He moved to Paris in about 1851 as overseer for the Dumas stove and tile firm, and in 1855 opened his own studio and, later his own retail shop, with his brother Xavier. He invited many well-known painters of the day to design decorations and also to paint some wares directly. Deck specialised in researching glazes and colours, inspired by the ceramics of the Middle and Far East. In 1887, only three years before his death, he became Director of the National Manufactory at Sèvres.","physicalDescription":"Dish and cover of earthenware decorated with impressed and incised geometric decoration and painted in colours.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Deck, Joseph-Théodore","id":"A2115"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"incised","id":"AAT53847"},{"text":"impressed","id":"x36460"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware painted in colour and, with incised and impressed decoration","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2010EL4648"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"I1","shelf":"4","box":""},{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"I1","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}],[{"text":"Cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860-1870","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1870-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish and cover of earthenware painted in colour, possibly Joseph-Théodore Deck, Paris, 1860-1870.\nC, T.
