They combine blown and flat glass sculptural forms with graphic sand-blasted motifs. Flavell creates the design by masking the glass and ‘blasting’ the exposed areas with a high speed jet of a fine abrasive such as sand. This piece, with its irregular amoeba-like shape, decoration of emerging forms and green and blue colouring, symbolises new life.\r\n\r\nFlavell spent a year in Sweden training at the celebrated Orrefors glass school, and his works have a clarity which may well be the result of this formative period.","physicalDescription":"This is an abstract piece in blue and green glass, the forms are reminiscent of amoebae and the work symbolises new life.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Flavell, Ray","id":"A642"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cut and sand-blasted glass","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[{"text":"20TH GB","id":"x29277"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AU4516"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"131 (VA)","id":"THES49882"},"free":"","case":"40","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sculpture","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Scotland","id":"x29130"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1991","earliest":"1991-01-01","latest":"1991-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"36.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Ray Flavell' incised","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Signature","note":"Signature"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Glass sculpture titled 'Greenpiece', by Ray Flavell, Scotland, 1991.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.204-1991"],"accessionNumberNum":"204","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1991,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Glass gallery number","id":"THES50491"},"number":"9787"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"1997-12-13","availableToBook":false}}
