Chinese porcelain was greatly admired by Europeans during this time, but in addition to traditional shapes and designs, they also ordered tableware and household objects made in imitation of western items or with specific decorative motifs, such as coat of arms, monograms or inscriptions. The East India trading companies supplied models and patterns to be copied by the Chinese potters.\r\n\r\nThe central design is a stylised version of the traditional Chinese landscape theme, a subject that was re-invented in Europe and integrated into the repertoire of western <i>chinoiserie</i>. The latter was then imitated again on Chinese porcelain made for export. This motif was perceived by European customers as purely 'oriental' and 'exotic', although it was very distant from the domestic taste in China.","physicalDescription":"Porcelain plate, decorated in pink enamel with a landscape scene featuring pagoda-type houses on rocks, surrounded by a double border of diaper pattern.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted in pink enamel","categories":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qianlong","id":"AAT18486"},{"text":"Chinese export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BT0477"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"22","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"PLATE","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1785-1790","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1790-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"24.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from a source not recorded in the Asia Department registers, accessioned in 1888.
