The moulded parts and the foot painted in gold and brownish red, the sides with two transfer-printed scenes in black; one shows a crimson battlefield, the other a woman seated on a chair, with her head in her hands, in a room with four children over which hovers an angel holding a ribbon inscribed 'Royal Patriotic Fund'. Below the moulded dots under the upper rim is a transfer-printed ribbon running in spiral form round a stalk with laurel leaves on it. The underside has a transfer-printed martial trophy on a plinth with a crowned cartouche containing the words 'The Royal Patriotic Jug Published by S. Alcock & Co. Hill Pottery, Burslem, January 1. 1855', below which is a diamond mark and the words 'G.
