He often worked on Chinese porcelain (as here) or on Meissen porcelain.  His particular speciality was a technique known as 'Schwarzlot' where the design was painted in black enamel with fine details being scratched out with a needle.\r\n\r\nPreissler was often commissioned by noblemen to decorate white pieces of porcelain, sometimes to commemorate battles or other events, or to create gifts for important personnages.  The patron of the Meissen factory, Augustus the Strong of Saxony, is known to have acquired over a dozen pieces decorated by Preissler in 1721, an indication of the high esteem in which he was held.","physicalDescription":"Painted in black enamel 'Schwarzlot' with scratched out details.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Preissler, Ignaz","id":"A865"},"association":{"text":"enamelled by","id":"x42360"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"hard paste porcelain","id":"AAT10663"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hard-paste porcelain, enamelled in black","categories":[{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"},{"text":"Tiles","id":"THES48884"}],"styles":[{"text":"Late Baroque","id":"AAT21151"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2009CB8638","2006AT2936"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"143 (VA)","id":"THES49867"},"free":"","case":"9","shelf":"2","box":""},{"current":{"text":"143 (VA)","id":"THES49867"},"free":"","case":"9","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"cups","id":"AAT43202"}],[{"text":"Saucer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Wroclaw","id":"x28765"},"association":{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Kunstat","id":"x43818"},"association":{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1720-1725","earliest":"1715-01-01","latest":"1725-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1720-1730","earliest":"1715-01-01","latest":"1730-12-31"},"association":{"text":"enamelled","id":"x30139"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Cup","note":"Dimensions taken from Registered Description, converted from inches"},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"11.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Saucer","note":"Dimensions taken from Registered Description, converted from inches"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cup and saucer, porcelain with painted European landscapes, made and painted in China, 17th Century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Brozkovà, Helena (ed) <i><u>Daniel a Ignàc Preisslerové</i></u> Czech exhibition catalogue of Applied Arts Museum in Prague, 2009"},{"reference":{"text":"Passion for Porcelain: masterpieces of ceramics from the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.","id":"AUTH321139"},"details":"p.33","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"hunting","id":"AAT239666"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["444-1869","444A-1869"],"accessionNumberNum":"444","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1869,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Cup","Saucer"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
