Teapot with bas-relief scenes\r\ncirca 1880\r\nhard-paste porcelain painted in colours and gold\r\nh 12,2 cm\r\nimprinted “N” with crown over it\r\ninv. C.82&A-1916\r\ngift: Lt. Col. K. Dingwall, DSO through The Art Fund\r\nThe teapot has three feet in the shape of lion claws and is decorated with bas-relief scenes; the knob of the cover is in the shape of a fruit. On the body of the pot there are two mythological scenes: the first one represents the Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne, the lead model of which is in the Museo di Doccia (inv. 6451).The other scene is taken from two engravings in Ovid’s Metamorphosis by abbot Antoine Banier: the figure of the Maenad on the left is from “L’Age d’Or” (BANIER 1732, vol. 1, p. 6), while the rest of the scene is based on the three representations of the Ages: “L’Age d’Argent”, “L’Age d’Airain” and “L’Age de Fer” (BANIER 1732, vol. 1, p. 8), from an idea of Godfried Maes, engraved by Philip van Gúnst. The lead model for this bas-relief is in the Museo di Doccia (inv. 6459).When the tea pot was donated it was attributed to Naples. This type of bas-relief scene was used at Doccia again starting about 1850 with the crowned “N” mark (CARÒLA-PERROTTI 2008, p. 58-93). Considering the eclectic nature of the shape, the teapot can be dated about 1880.
