This is a drawing on a thin sheet of paper, the outlines of which were pricked with a needle. This sheet was placed over the tiles and powdered charcoal was dusted or ‘pounced’ through the holes and onto the glaze below. The pounced outlines on the glaze were then traced over by the tile painter.\r\nThe design for this particular tile panel was copied from an engraving by Joseph Wagner (1706-1780), published in Venice in 1764, after a design by the painter Giuseppe Zocchi (1711-1767).\r\n","physicalDescription":"Panel of twenty-four tiles in tin-glazed earthenware painted in manganese with Abraham dismissing Hagar and Ishmael. Abraham is on the right and Hagar departs to the left with her child. To the left is a tree, and buildings are in the background.
