On the cover are a crown and two shields with the arms of Frederick Augustus II, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (b. 1676, became Elector in 1744, d. 1763). The shields on the cover surrounded by scrolls and alternating with two other scrolled shields with hunting scenes; round the edge are four narrow panels containing landscapes with figures in crimson camaieu, alternating with shield-shaped medallions, with love scenes in colours, all on a broad gilt band. The crown rests on a crimson cushion upheld by two cupids wearing blue and red drapery. The inside of the box gilt, the remaining surface of the top of the cover perforated with gilt conventional ornament and the underside decorated with floral sprays in low relief painted in enamel colours.
