During the First World War he served in the Wireless Instructional Section of the Royal Flying Corps.\r\n\r\nMcMichael Radio was established in 1922 by McMichael, in collaboration with design engineer Ben Hesketh. Their sets were made to a high standard and sold mainly through accredited dealers who received the company's in-house magazine, McMichael Messenger, a 12-page glossy monthly, containing information about the Company and its products with a front cover promoting the company's distinctive 'Lion and Grill' trade-mark. \n\nJ. Langham Thompson was given responsibility for set design for the 1935 Radio Show, the result being the 135 set, followed by the 235 and 335. The 135 console is a five valve including the rectifier Superhet for use on AC mains. This is a table model of the radio.","physicalDescription":"A radio in a veneered wooden case with two octagonal speakers and a lift up lid that conceals the dial and controls.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"McMichael Radio Ltd","id":"AUTH337899"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Veneered wooden case, metal speaker grilles.","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Audio equipment","id":"THES49027"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES341503"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Radio","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Slough","id":"x35742"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1935","earliest":"1935-01-01","latest":"1935-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"57.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"35.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"34.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements taken from online source - not checked on object.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased by the Circulation Department from 8th Sanderstead (St. Mary's) Scouts [1976/372].\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"McMichael Radio Ltd, model 135","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Hogben, Carol, <i>The Wireless Show!: 130 classic radio receivers, 1920s to 1950s</i>, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1977","id":"AUTH353368"},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"radio","id":"AAT249989"},{"text":"audio equipment","id":"AAT257199"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.25727"],"accessionNumberNum":"25727","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2021NB6093"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
