They can be distinguished from other kinds of buckle by the studs on the end of the chape, which fitted into holes made for that purpose at one end of the stock.  The prongs allowed it to be fastened tightly round the throat, as fashion demanded.  \r\nStock buckles are always rectangular or oval in shape, and were worn vertically.
