The crane would hang from the back of the hearth. By means of a swinging bracket and a sliding arm, cooking vessels could easily be moved over any part of the fire, at different heights.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMuseum Nos. 12-1894, 862-1907\r\n","date":{"text":"05/02/2025","earliest":"2025-02-05","latest":"2025-02-05"}},{"text":"CHIMNEY CRANE\r\nWrought iron\r\nEngland; 18th century\r\n\r\nThe chimney crane was an 18th-century addition to the open kitchen fireplace, a refinement of the simple 'ratchetted' pot-hook (see example nearby). Hung against the back wall of the hearth, it consisted of a swinging bracket with an adjustable sliding arm. This enabled a cooking vessel, suspended from the chain and hook, to be easily moved over any part of the open fire at various heights. By this means the cook avoided having to touch very hot and sooty pot handles and could control the cooking temperature more easily.
