Hung against the back wall of the hearth, it consisted of a swinging bracket with an adjustable sliding arm. This enabled a cooking vessel, suspended from the chain and hook, to be easily moved over any part of the open fire at various heights.  By this means the cook avoided having to touch very hot and sooty pot handles and could control the cooking temperature more easily. With the development of the closed range such objects became obsolete.","physicalDescription":"Chimney crane of wrought iron in the form of a swinging bracket, in the angle of which is a circular panel containing a symmetrical floral device.  To the bracket is hooked a long arm with scroll ornaments terminating in a knob handle at one end whilst at the other is hook suspended by a chain.  The sliding arm can be adjusted by means of a rack attached to the bracket.
