The number of different designs in the Tudor period was modest compared with the Stuart, during which 'C R' (Carolus Rex) was used in the reigns of both Charles I and Charles II. In the case of this fireback, the inclusion of '1635' in the design dates it to the reign of the former. After removing the moulds from the bed of sand, the liquid iron was then poured into the impression left by the pattern-mould and allowed to cool. Iron to be used for casting had to be heated to liquid form, which required a very high temperature. It is not known exactly when this became technically possible, but it was probably in the course of the 15th century.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"heraldic","id":"AAT9815"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"Fire","id":"x47334"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"FIREBACK\r\nCast iron\r\nEngland, dated 1635\r\n\r\nWith the royal arms of the Stuart sovereigns, the monogram of King Charles I (1625-49) and the motto of the English crown, DIEU ET MON DROIT.\r\n\r\nMuseum No. 795-1896\r\n","date":{"text":"03/02/2025","earliest":"2025-02-03","latest":"2025-02-03"}},{"text":"FIREBACK\r\nCast iron\r\nEngland; dated 1635\r\n\r\nWith the royal arms of the Stuart sovereigns, the initials CR - the monogram of King Charles I 1625-49) - and the motto of the English crown, DIEU ET MON DROIT (God and my right).\r\n\r\nMuseum No. 795-1896","date":{"text":"07/1994","earliest":"1994-07-01","latest":"1994-07-31"}}],"partNumbers":["795-1896"],"accessionNumberNum":"795","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1896,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-11","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
