The nature of the hinge and the unecessarily complicated backplate suggests the lock has been cut down. It is chiselled with two ionic columns, the figure of St James the Great  holding a book and sword beneath a shell-shaped canopy and the symbols of the evangelists St Matthew  (a man) and St Luke (an ox). St James the Great, the brother of John the Evangelist, is particularly featured in Spanish craftsmanship, commemorating his legendary mission to Spain and burial at Compostella. For reasons that are not altogether clear the scallop shell became the distinctive badge of pilgrims to his shrine and is known to have been used from early in the 12th century.","date":{"text":"07/1994","earliest":"1994-07-01","latest":"1994-07-31"}}],"partNumbers":["5619-1859"],"accessionNumberNum":"5619","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1859,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-15","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
