In the centre of the plaque is the initial 'S' in brass. The firedogs terminate in brass finials in the shape of three leaves. They most likely date from post 1838 when Pugin was working for the Scarisbrick family and had met John Hardman Jr his favoured metalworker. The design appears as No. 11 in a catalogue by John Hardman and Co, New Hall Hill, Birmingham from about 1875, a quarter of a century after Pugin's death.
