Influenced by Ruskin and Morris, he intended the Guild to be a co-operative venture which would encourage the full creative potential of the craftsman. At the turn of the century, the Guild was at the height of its success and had evolved a distinctive and mature style. Softly planished surfaces decorated with chasing and embossing were characteristic of Ashbee's designs and had a significant effect on contemporary silver in Europe and America as well as Britain. Financially however, the Guild was less successful and in 1908, Ashbee was forced to wind up its affairs.","physicalDescription":"Salt cellar with a glass liner, (one of a set of four), silver, three sided, open, embossed and chased and set with three chrysoprases.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ashbee","id":"A8102"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Guild of Handicraft Ltd","id":"A9111"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"chrysoprase","id":"AAT11142"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"piercing","id":"AAT231153"},{"text":"embossing","id":"AAT53826"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, embossed and chased, set with three chrysoprases","categories":[{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Silver","id":"THES251836"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts movement","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2019MG6000"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES335703"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES335703"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Salt cellar","id":""}],[{"text":"Liner","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":"Essex House"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1901-1902","earliest":"1901-05-29","latest":"1902-05-28"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"CIRC.353:1-1959","id":"CIRC.353:2-1959"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.354:1-1959","id":"CIRC.354:2-1959"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.356:1-1959","id":"CIRC.356:2-1959"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Gift of Her Grace, the Duchess of Leeds","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"1","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.9","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"London hallmarks for 1901-02","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Mark of the Guild of Handicraft","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Gift of Her Grace, the Duchess of Leeds","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Salt cellar and liner, silver and glass, London hallmarks for 1901-02, mark of the Guild of Handicraft, designed by C.R.
