The base has a stepped rim formed of a plain concave moulding. Above this is a narrow band of ornament bordered by two plain convex mouldings. This band is chased with repeating foliage and strapwork separated at intervals by enclosed foliate scrolls, the ground of the chased design has been matted with a ring punch.. The large plain dome is engraved at the front with an earl's coronet and crest. The crest is as follows: On a chapeau gules turned up erminoise, a lion statant gardant, tail extended. At the top is a raised circular platform with a concave edge, chased with foliate scrolls and formalised plants on a matted ground, of similar design to the ornament on the base, but by a different hand. Set in the centre of the circular platform is a small circular plate chased with leaves, this is surmounted by a large plain turned knob of silvered brass, formed of plain mouldings. The dish-covers are not mentioned in the Howard plate inventory of 1732-3, presumably because they are of brass not silver. However, a letter in the Castle archives (CHA/58/34/245) dated June 29th 1732 from Michael Jackson, the Howards' London agent, to the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, states \"Mr Williams tells me he does not doubt but to have all the plate ready against the 10th of next month and I have a promis that the 4 dish covers shall be ready at the same time!\" The provenance, ornament and engraved crest make it reasonably certain this is one of the dish-covers mentioned in the above letter. \nMr Williams is the London goldsmith David Williams. Because the dish-covers are mentioned separately from the rest of the plate, it seems likely that Williams was buying these from a brass supplier rather than making them himself.\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dish-cover, silvered brass, engraved with the crest of Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle, England, ca. 1732","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.38-1994"],"accessionNumberNum":"38","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1994,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
