This example was probably made in France, and is a somewhat cruder version of the arch-cittern by Sébastien Renault (Museum no. 207-1882). It may have been used as a folk instrument, in the same way as arch-citterns made and played at this time in Germany and Switzerland.","physicalDescription":"\"A cruder version of the two preceding instruments [Museum nos. 207-1882 and 211-1882], with simulated purfling painted on the pine belly. The neck and pegboxes are painted black. The fingerboard (length 33 cm) at one time had seventeen frets, but has been refitted with fourteen brass frets. The main peg box is for seven strings and the upper for five. The upper pegbox has a straight nut and a square finial\". - Anthony Baines: Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-keyboard instruments (London, 1998), p. 54.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28690"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pine","id":"AAT12620"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"sycamore","id":"AAT12357"}],"techniques":[{"text":"joining","id":"AAT137062"},{"text":"planing","id":"AAT53863"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"planed and joined pine soundboard with painted edging; sycamore back and sides; neck and pegboxes of wood painted black.","categories":[{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2010ED6457","2010ED6463","2010ED6462","2010ED6461","2010ED6460","2010ED6459","2010ED6458","2010ED6456","2010ED5746","2010ED5745","2010ED5744"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES379864"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Arch-cittern","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1780-1800","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"107","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"total length","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"47.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of body","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"66.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum string length","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"48","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"miniumu string length","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"35","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements taken from Anthony Baines: Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-keyboard instruments. (London, 1998), p. 54.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This instrument formed part of the collections of Carl Engel (1818-1882) and was purchased by this museum for £3.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Arch cittern, pine soundboard and sycamore back and sides, French, 1780-1800","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Anthony Baines: Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-keyboard instruments. (London, 1998), p. 54"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["221-1882"],"accessionNumberNum":"221","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1882,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-11","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
