The business approached Conran Associates, a design subsidiary of Habitat, to design a range of plastic products for the office or home. \n\nThe Input range was launched in May 1973 and designed by Conran Associates for Crayonne, a newly established division of Airfix. The range consisted of 21 'containers' including bowls, dishes, trays, bins, vases, pots and an ice bucket which were all made from heavy duty ABS plastic, selected for its strength and scratch and shatter resistance. Gift boxed to elevate their appeal, they were initially produced in four colours: red, yellow, green and white.\n\nThe containers were produced to be almost twice as thick as other ABS products through a particularly low rate injection moulding cycle. All the units in the range were based on the same diameter and height ratios to achieve an integrated appearance and were given identification numbers, rather than names. The Royal Free Hospital placed an order of the containers to be used as vases to bring colour and cheer to their wards.\n\nThe range won a Design Centre Award and featured in the exhibition British Design 1948–2012: Innovation in the Modern Age at the V&A in 2012.","physicalDescription":"A red plastic cylindrical shaped bin with lid","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Conran Associates","id":"A2942"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Crayonne Ltd","id":"A2941"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer","id":"AAT14418"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Heavy-duty ABS resin containers.","categories":[{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"},{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2013GA5593"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"76","id":"THES49548"},"free":"","case":"PL30","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"76","id":"THES49548"},"free":"","case":"PL30","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"76","id":"THES49548"},"free":"","case":"PL30","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Wastepaper bin","id":""}],[{"text":"Collar (container components)","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1970-1975","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1975-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"39","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Loans officer","date":{"text":"01/11/2011","earliest":"2011-11-01","latest":"2011-11-01"},"part":"Wastepaper bin","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"29","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Loans officer","date":{"text":"01/11/2011","earliest":"2011-11-01","latest":"2011-11-01"},"part":"Wastepaper bin","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Winner of Design Centre Award in 1974.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Red 'Input' wastepaper bin designed by Conran Associates for Crayonne, ABS plastic, 1970-1975\n\nred plastic, from bin, English, 1970-5, Conran Associates\n\nblack rubber, from bin, English, 1970-5, Conran Associates","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Contract and Consumer Goods'.
