Stands were made of a variety of materials, including porcelain, metal and wood. This pair of stands are fitted with glass containers designed to show the decorative effect of the roots of the bulbs as they grew, an effect which would have been enhanced by natural light as the stands would have been placed on a window sill. The stands were given to the Museum in 1978 by John Fowler, an interior decorator responsible for the furnishing and restoration of many historic houses in Britain. These stands are typical of the modest examples of domestic furnishing which he recognised as of historic interest.","physicalDescription":"The pair of bulb stands are each formed of three semi-circular wooden panels, arranged one above the other with the two larger on the bottom and in the middle, and the smaller one at the top. The middle and bottom panels are supported by five square section uprights. The top panel is placed towards the centre back of the middle panel, supported on three uprights, and is pierced with two holes, each fitted with a glass container which sits on the middle panel. The middle panel is pierced with four holes, each fitted with a glass container which sits on the bottom panel.
